Tips to help you deal with a nest of baby skunks

It is not uncommon to come into contact with a nest of baby skunks. Mostly, these nests are found in shed cavities and under the porch. The months of May and June are the times of the year when baby skunks are born. They will then mature in a few months’ time. This means that early in the year and in the fall and winter months, the skunk nest will probably be empty.

Call for professional help
In case you do come across a nest of baby skunks, this is what you should do. If you are not sure you can handle things on your own, then it is best for you to contact professional wildlife removers to help you deal with the situation.

Dealing with female skunks
Before you act on a nest of baby skunks, you should expect to have to deal with a female skunk or an adult skunk. The female skunks are more aggressive and will defend her offspring to the limit. Thus, if you come across a nest of baby skunks, you need to back off and then turn your attention to trapping the adult female skunk. This will enable you to deal with the babies without fear of a skunk attack.

Dealing with adult skunks
If there is no female skunk around, then you may come across an adult skunk. In such a case, you will need to use a baited trap to snare the adult skunk. Some people try to use baby skunks as bait to trap the adult skunk but it makes more sense to use some tasty food (for the skunk) as bait. Be sure to put the bait near the entrance of the trap and once the skunk has been trapped, you can then cover the trap with a blanket to prevent it from spraying you. After that, you can then deal with the baby skunks.

Be wary of baby skunks
Keep in mind that even baby skunks are able to spray a small amount of their foul-smelling liquid. So, be sure to wear protective clothing and also cover your hands in thick rubber gloves. Be sure to be gentle when removing the baby skunks and make sure you only handle them with your hands encased in proper gloves. Once the baby skunks have been caught, you can then put them in a box in which you can transport them away to some place safe. It is a good idea to relocate the baby skunk with the female skunk after which you can clean the area and disinfect it. Just keep in mind that when you come across a nest of baby skunks, you should not think they are abandoned or without a mother. The female skunk may be out looking for food. So, make sure you factor this in when dealing with a nest of baby skunks.
